Sundarbans is home to many birds, mammals, insects, reptiles and fish. More than 120 species of fish and over 260 species of birds have been recorded in the Sundarbans. Gangetic dolphin (Platanista gangeticus) is common in the rivers. Not less than 50 known species of reptiles and eight species of amphibians occur. The Sundarbans are now the only population in the estuary or saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus parasus) in Bangladesh, and that population is estimated at fewer than two hundred people.
